Formative years spent in North Yorkshire before entering the Army, aged 18, for 2 years compulsory National Service joining the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Hygiene Inspector. Five and a half years at the Royal Veterinary College, London followed, qualifying as a Veterinary Surgeon in 1959. Married Kay in 1960 and together lived in Suffolk where their daughter was born. Then moved to Warwickshire, Bedfordshire and finally to Cumbria residing in the Parish of Wetheral for 43 years.

Joined the Parish Council in 1975 becoming Chairman on 5 separate occasions also chairing the Rights of Way, Cemetery and Planning Committees. Became an Executive Member of the Carlisle Parish Council Association and Cumbria Association of Local Councils. Barry’s interests have been varied:- Former trustee of Wetheral Village Hall (Chairman for many years),Hannah Robinson Bequest, William Parker Educational Trust, Thomas Graham Educational Trust, and Wetheral Nursing Association. Governor of Wetheral Junior School (until closure in 1977) and Cumwhinton Junior School ( Chairman of Curriculum, Health & Safety and Buildings Committees before being Chair of Governors). Retiring in 2009 when he moved to another village. A co-ordinator of Neighbourhood Watch for the village of Cumwhinton for 5 years.

Following his retirement as a Veterinary Surgeon in August 1999, Barry decided to become more active in Local Politics and was elected as the Wetheral Ward Councillor in 2003.
