A quiet week to catch up with Ward/Council work and gardening when it is not raining!!

27th   Today it is the Civic Breakfast, followed by a Church Service in St Cuthbert’s Church the Civic Church and then a procession of the City Councillors to the Market Cross where the Proclamation of the Great Fair is read out by the Town Clerk and Chief Executive, Jason Gooding.    All funds for the Civic Breakfast are donated by local businesses and City Councillors, the proceeds being given to the Mayor’s Charities which this year include Carlisle Key, Hospice at Home and Carlisle Young Carers.   For the last few years I have supplied the eggs for the breakfast and did so again this year.   I had to be up early to be at the Tythe Barn for 8.20 a.m., following a full English Breakfast the Councillors robed up to proceed to St. Cuthbert’s Church for a Civic Service conducted by the City Chaplain, Rev Keith Teasdale and the reading was read by the Mayor, Councillor Colin Stothard.   Following the service the Civic Procession, preceded by the Town Crier and the Sword and Mace Bearers walked to the Market Cross where the  Proclamation was read out at 10 a.m.   Afterwards, the Mayor and Councillors toured the various stalls before disrobing in the Tythe Barn.

28th   Attended the Flower and Scarecrow Festival in Cotehill Village, the money raised to be used by the local St John’s Church to provide cloakroom facilities.   After visiting the church we enjoyed afternoon tea in the Village Hall.   Some £3,000 was raised by the event.   A lot of hard work had been put in by the villagers of Cotehill and Cumwhinton for this event and the flowers had been donated in memory of those who had lost their lives in recent times.   A village community working together for the common good of the inhabitants.
